Luuk de Jong was a long-term transfer target for Alan Pardew and chief scout Graham Carr, and they finally landed their man in January 2014.
De Jong had moved from FC Twente to Borussia Mönchengladbach two years earlier, but the Dutchman found life tough in Germany.
He found it even tougher in England, and failed to hit the net in any of his 12 appearances. Fans blame Pardew for playing him out of position.
