Newcastle United picked Seydou Doumbia to play for their U21 side against Stoke City on Monday night.

The Magpies new boy hasn’t featured for the first team since joining on a season-long loan from AS Roma on deadline day – although he had made the bench for fixtures against Everton and West Bromwich Albion.

Doumbia hasn’t played a lot of football this season, and head coach Steve McClaren is keen to manage his workload to ensure he hits the ground running when he finally makes that first appearance.

The Ivory Coast forward has started 11 times for CSKA Moscow this season, but last made a competitive appearance during the Champions League against PSV Eindhoven in December.
